Pouring Mediums: Consistency Is Almost Everything

Pouring looks like a technique about colour. In practice it is a technique about viscosity.

Aim for a consistent flow

Every colour in a pour should flow at roughly the same rate. Mixtures of different thicknesses separate unpredictably, which is where muddy results come from.

Mix thoroughly, slowly

Stir until uniform but without whipping air in. Air bubbles rise and burst as the surface sets, leaving craters.

Let it rest

Leaving mixed paint to stand for a while lets trapped air escape before it goes onto the surface.

Surface preparation

Pouring needs a level, sealed, rigid surface. A canvas that flexes or a board that is not level will move the paint after you have stopped controlling it.
