Fabric Painting: Heat-Set Mediums Explained

Acrylic on fabric goes stiff and cracks unless something changes how it behaves. That is what a fabric medium is for.

What it does

It makes the dried paint film flexible so it moves with the cloth instead of sitting on top as a brittle layer, and it improves how the paint bonds to the fibres.

Heat setting

Many fabric applications need heat after drying to become washable. Follow the maker’s instructions on time and temperature — this step is what determines whether the work survives a wash.

Prepare the fabric

Wash and dry new fabric first to remove finishes, and do not use fabric softener. Paint applied over a factory finish adheres poorly.

Test on a scrap

Use an offcut of the same fabric and put it through a full wash before committing to the real piece.
